TB Treatment

Active TB - Phase 1

‘Standard’ Phase 1 Antibiotics

4 antibiotics plus a B6 vitamin

  • Rifampicin (RIF or RMP)

  • Ethambutol (EMB)

  • Isoniazid (INH)

  • Pyrazinamide (PZA)

Taken DAILY

  • Monday to Friday - DOT

  • Saturday and Sunday - person takes their pills on their own at home (also called Auto-Administer or AA).

Usually 60 total doses. This is about 2 months if a person takes their pills every day.

This is the most common Phase 1 treatment but it is possible to have different pills or time to take them.

Example conversation with someone who’s starting the standard Phase 1 Active TB treatment:

Standard

  • People who have taken Active TB treatment before have said that Phase 1 is harder than Phase 2 because you have to take your pills every day. I say this so you can really focus on Phase 1 and knowing that Phase 2 will be easier.

  • The standard combo of antibiotics you take for Phase 1 are Rifampicin (RIF or RMP), Ethambutol (EMB), Isoniazid (INH) and Pyrazinamide (PZA).

  • This phase of treatment is taken every day. From Monday to Friday, you’ll come to the clinic to take your pills. Then on Friday we’ll give you two sets of pills to take for the weekend.
