Mindset Check Ups & Focusing on What You Can Control

Within each Section there are 1 or more "Mindset Check Ups". These Mindset Check Ups usually start with "I..." and are about focusing on what you can control as the PHO. Taking action based on the things you can control is a good step in taking care of yourself and growing as a PHO. Check out these examples:

CAN'T Control

Action

CAN Control

No fish at COOP for sushi night.

Making goose soup instead.

Enjoying a meal together with your friends.

The X-ray Tech's plane is cancelled so the family you asked to come can't get their X-ray today.

Call, apologize for the inconvenience and ask if we can reschedule.

How you share this information with the family.

Offering Care

One of the most important PHO roles is offering care, even when people say no or don't answer. Other PHOs (or people in similar jobs) have said they don't feel good about their job because they feel personally responsible for their patient's decisions or actions. It's important to realize how valuable the act of continuing to offer care is. You can't force a person to come for screening, treatment, or follow up. You've done your job by offering, what happens next is up to the person.

Mindset Check Up:

Let's think about it another way! Imagine a cashier at COOP. The cashier still needs to work, and the COOP still needs to be open even if no one's buying anything. But when a person needs something or has time to do their shopping, the store and the cashier are ready for them.

Mindset Check Ups:

  • I provide quality care regardless of other people's moods
Keep offering - don't take things personally

  • I can listen to what someone is telling me without taking it on
Some things are not in my power to change

  • I do my best even though things might be out of my control

Lots of things are happening in the clinic that are not in your control (ex. weather, internet, machines not working...)

  • I can tell when a person's reaction has nothing to do with me

Keeping the Positive in Mind

Sometimes we have the tendency to focus on all the things that are going wrong, instead of all the things that are going right. In the work of the PHO, it is particularly important to appreciate wins when they happen. Some examples of these wins could be:

  1. The person who showed up after months of calling them.

  2. The person who comes for their pills every day.

  3. The person who felt confident to ask the nurse a question.

Mindset Check Up: I celebrate the wins

Resilient Confidence

Nurturing the connection between the community and their health is what the PHO is all about. This is an incredibly valuable and important service to the community and the health team. Supporting people in TB care takes a team effort.

The TB team of PHOs, doctors, nurses, and other clinic staff all have different strengths to offer. No one can be expected to know everything. Relying on the strengths of different people is a normal and helpful part of working in a health team. Asking questions, asking for help, and even making mistakes are all important opportunities to learn and grow. The key here is to really focus on the learnings instead of being discouraged.

There is a lot of power in owning what you don't know or owning your mistakes and showing what the experience taught you.

Mindset Check Ups:

  • I know I contribute a lot to the health and wellbeing of my community

  • I know I'm good at my job even if I don't have all the answers
It's okay not to know all the answers

  • I know I can make mistakes
Making mistakes doesn't mean anything bad about me as a person or as a worker

  • I can ask for help without feeling judged

>> Setting Boundaries
Mindset Check Ups

  • I know I deserve to be treated with respect

  • I know it's okay to say no to out of work activities

  • I protect my own mental health
I can't pour from an empty cup

>> Responding to Situations
Mindset Check Ups

  • I can use different ways of talking to people depending on the situation

  • If I misread a situation, I know I can repair the relationship

>> Relationships with Co-Workers
Mindset Check Ups

  • I realize my co-workers might have different lived experiences

  • I realize my co-workers are people too
