Finding Early: For You
Using the picture to talk with someone about the benefits of screening:
Thanks for coming in! On the phone, I told you that you’ve been asked to come for community TB screening. We are doing community screening because TB is in the community and we are checking many people - even if you don’t have symptoms or haven’t been around anyone who has TB.
I’m going to talk to you quickly about the benefits of community screening. These benefits mostly have to do with finding TB early.
For starters, if you do have the TB germ in your body, you could start treatment before you start to feel sick, and the TB germ would cause very little to no long-term damage to your body.
The earlier we find TB in the body usually means a shorter treatment with less pills. If it’s only in the Latent stage, you would even be taking your antibiotics at home rather than coming into the clinic.
Also, because TB would be in early stages, it’s not likely that you’d be contagious so that means you wouldn’t have to isolate at home or in the hospital.
Finally, and this something people don’t talk about as much, but doing the screening takes away the stress of not knowing. Being tested now will give you the peace of mind that you don’t have TB.
